CPM Drift: Why the Number Moves After a Reshaft

A customer replaces a broken shaft with the identical model at the same length, and the club reads seven CPM different. Six explanations, in the order we check them.

This comes up often enough that we work through it in a fixed order. The causes below are ranked by how frequently they turn out to be the culprit on our bench, not by how dramatic they sound.

One: The Grip Changed

By far the most common answer, and the one people never suspect. Frequency is measured with the club clamped at the butt, so grip mass and the number of tape layers sit right where the measurement is most sensitive.

Swap a 50-gram grip for a 60-gram one and add two extra wraps of tape, and you can move the reading by three or four CPM without touching the shaft at all. This is why our build cards record grip model and tape layer count, not just "regripped".

Two: Head Mass Is Not What It Was

Clubheads within a production run vary by a few grams. If a head was replaced under warranty, or the club being compared is a different specimen of the same model, the head mass may differ enough to shift frequency by two or three CPM.

Tip weights and hosel shims from a previous build are a second source. Pull a shaft and you often find a lead plug somebody installed years ago to hit a swingweight target. Reinstall without it and the number moves.

Three: Tip Trim Was Not Reproduced

If the original build was not documented, the replacement gets trimmed to a chart while the original may have been trimmed to something else entirely, including soft or hard stepped. Every quarter inch of difference in tip trim is worth roughly one and a half to two CPM.

This is the reason the build card exists. Without it, reproducing a club is guesswork dressed up as procedure.

Four: Epoxy Quantity and Cure State

A generous glue-up leaves several grams of cured epoxy inside the tip. Not much, but it is mass at the far end of the lever and it does register. More significantly, a club measured before the epoxy has fully cured will read differently from the same club two days later, because a partially cured joint is not yet rigid.

We measure after a full cure for exactly this reason, and a reading taken an hour after assembly is not one we will write on a card.

Five: Production Tolerance in the Shaft Itself

Two shafts of the same model and flex from the same manufacturer will not be identical. Better manufacturers hold tighter tolerances, but a spread of two to three CPM between individual shafts of the same part number is entirely normal and is not a defect.

This is one reason we frequency-check raw shafts before building a set rather than assuming that eight shafts from one box are interchangeable.

Six: The Clamp Position or the Machine

Last on the list because it is the least common, but worth ruling out. Frequency machines need consistent clamp position and clamp pressure. Two shops measuring the same club can disagree by several CPM if their setups differ, which makes cross-shop comparison of absolute numbers unreliable.

What is always reliable is the difference between two clubs measured on the same machine in the same session. That is why we care far more about the step between your 6-iron and 7-iron than about the absolute figure either one produces.

The Practical Advice

  • Record grip model and tape layers, every time, or your future self cannot reproduce the club
  • Weigh the head before and after any head replacement
  • Never measure frequency before a full epoxy cure
  • Compare clubs to each other on one machine rather than to numbers from elsewhere
  • Treat a two to three CPM discrepancy as normal, and a seven CPM discrepancy as a question worth answering

If you have a club that no longer feels like the one it replaced, bring both in. Twenty minutes at the bench and the intake table usually names the culprit.
